There are two restaurants on Isla that I love so much that I am actually planning my next vacation to allow us to eat at both of these spots. Next March, we will be visiting Tulum for a week, but I just couldn’t be that close to Isla Mujeres and NOT eat at my favorites.
Numero Uno on my list is La Lomita (Avenida Juarez | #25 Sur, Isla Mujeres). This brilliantly painted small restaurant with fuchsia hibiscus painted along the walls will make you smile instantly. It is located within walking distance from Centro in a residential neighborhood. There are maybe 6 tables inside and a few along the sidewalk that abuts the street.
My favorite part about La Lomita, aside from the food and charming décor, is the ceramic mug that the ice cold cerveza is served in. We liked them so much that we bought two to bring home! Now that is a momento of a great trip. Every time we have a cold beer at home, our mouths start watering for La Lomita! The other favorite thing is the black bean soup. It is a soul warming Mexican comfort food. I dream about this soup. It is a bowl of goodness even in the scorching heat of summer. The other food was excellent as well, although I was stuffed from my bowl of soup. Maybe we will share an entrée after our soup when we visit in the spring. I have tried both the shrimp enchiladas and the chile relleno, and both were outstanding.
My new favorite restaurant that I discovered on my most recent visit to Isla last summer is Basto’s Grill (Calle 9 Lte 15, La Gloria, Isla Mujeres). This is yet another quaint restaurant in La Gloria neighborhood of Isla Mujeres. The inside of the restaurant is small, but there are a few tables along the narrow sidewalk out front. We were first served chips with a few different variety of salsa. Beware of the green sauce….it is NOT for the faint of heart! Then, we were served the most amazing steak that I have ever eaten ANYWHERE in the world! As you can see from the picture above, the steak was served topped with cheese and cucumber. It is THIS dish that has me returning to Isla Mujeres in March. I cannot wait!
